Anti-Doping Education Session for Team Philippines in the Asian Youth Games 2025

The Philippine National Anti-Doping Organization (PHI-NADO), in fulfillment of its mandate, holds a seminar on Anti-Doping Education for Team Philippines on September 30, 2025 at Diamond Hotel, Malate, City of Manila. The young athletes are bound for Bahrain to represent the country in the 3rd Asian Youth Games 2025 on October 22 to 31, 2025.

With the theme, “Clean Sport, Bright Future: Building Filipino Champions with Integrity," the seminar aims to promote sports integrity and to build a culture of clean sport by educating the delegates on the anti-doping measures in compliance to the World Anti-Doping Code 2021. Almost 200 athletes, coaches, and sports association officials have taken part in the seminar physically and via Zoom.

On behalf of Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman John Patrick “Pató” C. Gregorio, PSC Commissioner Ms. Olivia “Bong” G. Coo, delivers the opening remarks, followed by an Introduction to Anti-Doping by PHI-NADO Head, Dr. Alejandro V. Pineda, Jr. Then, Mr. Ramon "Tats” Suzara, the Chef de Mission of the Philippine delegation to the Asian Youth Games 2025 delivers a short message. Also present in the event were PSC Commissioners, Matthew “Fritz” P. Gaston and Walter Francis K. Torres; PSC OIC-Executive Director Atty. Guillermo B. Iroy, Jr; and PSC Deputy Executive Director for Administrative, Financial, and Management Services, Merlita Ibay.

PHI-NADO’s Doping Control Officer, Mr. Nathan Vasquez gives a lecture on the doping control process; while Ms. Alethea Laquindanum, also a Doping Control Officer, conducts a demonstration on the anti-doping testing process. Dr. Marion G. Rivera delivers a lecture on the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) Prohibited List, a list of prohibited substances & methods, and the Therapeutic Use Exemption, concluded by a Q&A portion.

In a panel discussion entitled, “The Athlete’s Code: Principle of Strict Liability, Rights & Responsibilities of Athletes," Philippine Olympic Commission (POC) Athletes’ Commission Chairman, Mr. Jessie Lacuna joins Jiu-jitsu champion, Ms. Meggie Ochoa in a meaningful dialogue sparking inspiration to the young Filipino athletes.

As a result of the small group discussions entitled, “Why Compete Clean? Building a Culture of Clean Sport”, the athletes present their outputs highlighting their commitment to practicing clean sport and upholding sport integrity.

The program concludes with the awarding of certificates of participation to all the athletes, and delivery of closing remarks by Dr. Pineda.

PHI-NADO is committed to promoting sport integrity among Filipino athletes. Today’s seminar is just one of the many activities that PHI-NADO has prepared towards educating the athletes on anti-doping and building a culture of clean sport in the country.
